10 Best Media Players For Android

Android has been pretty weak in the multimedia department when it first got released, having almost no audio and video codecs besides the basic ones and no good media player apps on the marketplace. That posed quite a problem for a young OS that was meant for the mass market.

But fortunately, things started changing once the operating system became more mainstream. More and more developers started working on apps for the users, and of course, multimedia was a big requirement for them. That’s why now, almost 2 years later, we have a lot of great media players, both for music and video, on the Android marketplace. There are actually about a hundred such apps, but most of them failed to get any traction.

Stock Android Music Player

The stock Android music player is the most used player for Android – for obvious reasons. It’s not very good though, but it does get the job done. Google has integrated the most popular codecs and formats into it, so you can play aac, mp3, wma, wav files without a hitch, but you won’t be able to play some of the more exotic formats, like flac. The interface is simple and practical –big buttons and text made for touch screens, which are very easy to see and press. If you don’t need some of the more advanced features, this is a pretty good player.

How To Unlock 4.2.1 iOS iPhone 3GS / 3G With Baseband Update To 06.15.00 Using PwnageTool 4.1.3 + Ultrasn0w 1.2 [Guide]

he latest update of ultrasn0w unlock was released a couple of days back by the iPhone-Dev team which supports unlocking any iPhone 3G / 3GS on iOS 4.2.1. However to achieve the unlock with ultrasn0w 1.2, your device must be on 06.15.00 baseband for which an unlock edition of PwnageTool 4.1.3 has been released that can update the baseband of iPhone 3G / 3GS running iOS 4.2.1 to 06.15.00 allowing the new ultrasn0w 1.2 to work.

To make things easier, follow our step-by-step guide below to update your iPhone’s baseband and jailbreak it on iOS 4.2.1 with PwnageTool 4.1.3. After this you can easily unlock your iPhone 3G / 3GS with ultrasn0w 1.2.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU PROCEED!
Your baseband will be updated to 06.15.00 during the process (as 05.14 or 05.15 are not supported by the new ultrasn0w 1.2). Proceed only if you need the unlock. For only jailbreaking your iPhone 3G / 3GS which does not require carrier unlock, follow this guide. Also:

1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Enable Widescreen 720p Photos on the iPod touch 4G [Jailbreak Tweak]

If you own an iPod touch 4G, you would already know that the camera cannot take widescreen 720p photos. With a tweak called HD Photographer available in Cydia, you can now enable widescreen photos using the built-in camera app on the iPod touch 4G. This adds more pixels to the photos you take but at the price of losing the default 4:3 aspect ratio. Technically, this tweak increases the iPod touch 4G’s rear camera from 0.7 megapixels (960×720) to 1.0 megapixels (1280×720).

The app is activated automatically when you install it, so there is no icon but there is a toggle in the camera app that lets you turn HD Photographer on and off.

This App Turns Your iPhone into a Radar Gun [REVIEW]

SpeedClock is a new app available in the app store that turns your iPhone into radar gun. Even though SpeedClock may be a useful tool, there could also be an accuracy issue in the app because of the estimation of distance the user must estimate. There is also possibly a greater accuracy issue for the iPhone 3GS becuase it doesnt have the gyroscope feature like the 4th Generation iDevices.

Despite SpeedClock's accuracy issue, in time it is probably going to improve and expand on it's goal. Here is the information from the developers of SpeedClock gave us from the press conference:

Employing the device’s three-axis gyro and basic trigonometry establishes distance. Speed and laps are measured using the motion sensing of the video camera, timing the interval between the object entering and leaving the frame. The app is compatible with iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4.
Speed Clock also has many other features including a speedometer, a timer, and a distance tool. The speedometer feature is basically meaasuring the speed of a moving object. It basically uses the camera to capture the speed of the moving object. Fortunately, this app comes with settings to set what speed to record it in and also the sensitivity according to your surroundings which improves the accuracy.

Gumdrop Surf Slider iPhone 4 Case Review and Video

Slider cases were at the center of the recent controversy surrounding cracked and shattered glass rear panels on iPhone 4s.  Hard Candy’s Tim Hickman claimed the whole thing wasn’t a problem, saying that his company had shipped more than 20,000 cases and hadn’t had a single related complaint.  He added that if there was a problem, he’d have heard about it by now.  Gumdrop is an offshoot of Hard Candy, so it’s likely that Mr. Hickman was including the Surf Slider in his statement.

Available in red, blue, smoke or the frosted look that you see here; the Surf Slider splits into two, three-quarters of the way down the case.  Inside there are four rubber pads which securely hold the iPhone 4 in place, and despite their compression, would allow some grit to come in contact with the phone itself.  Our solution?  Clean the iPhone 4 and the inside of the case with a cloth before fitting it.

Two Kinects join forces to create better 3D video, blow our minds (video)

Remember when Oliver Kreylos impressed and shocked us by showing that a single Microsoft Kinect could create some remarkably stout 3D video? He's back at it again, this time blowing minds and demonstrating that two Kinects can be paired and their output meshed -- one basically filling in the gaps of the other.

He found that the two do create some interference, the dotted IR pattern of one causing some holes and blotches in the other, but when the two are combined they basically help each other out and the results are quite impressive.

My next iPad won't be a 7-incher, but I wish it could be

It took me a while, but I'm starting to fall in love with my iPad in a way I haven't loved a gadget for a long while. There's something about the form factor, the apps, the OS that feels just right and makes me want to do as much of my daily computing on it as possible. Of course, that's still a pretty small sliver of my overall day, and the iPad isn't even close to replacing my laptop for the large majority of my work, but I'm finding myself increasingly doing casual browsing, casual gaming, serious writing, and, yes, even some reading on Apple's 10-inch tablet.

But I have one "big" problem with the tablet that doesn't look like it'll be solved anytime soon: it's not 7 inches. Will Apple ever eat its words and build a smaller iPad, or will the 7-inch form factor be left to the rest of the emerging tablet market to fight over?

Never mind those ports of classic RPGs. We need to get serious. Look to the future. Don’t worry, I’ll be here every step of the way. This is why I’m showing you Chaos Rings, one of the most polished RPGs you will have ever seen created solely for the iPhone. This gem boasts over 20 hours of battle-focused gameplay, while looking absolutely gorgeous throughout.

In comparison with other RPGs on the system, Chaos Rings is an app with more bang for your buck. For £7.49/$12.99 you are getting an interesting narrative, a selection of characters to choose from, plenty of maps to explore and treasure hunt through, as well as numerous puzzles to solve in between.

Plus it controls like a dream. The battle menu is lavished with large buttons for ease of use, and you can use the analogue-stick styled controller to run around freely from anywhere on the touch screen. No more fumbling around working out where to touch. Not that you have that problem, right?

VLC Media Player for iPad Plays Every Video Format

Now you don’t have to convert every video before putting it to your iPad, as VLC Media Player app available for iPad plays almost every video file. The only requirements for this application is iOS 3.2 or higher on your iPad. The VLC Media Player app provides a very simple interface, just like Apple’s official app for YouTube, so that you get the maximum video experience.

Let me quote a comment by Ben Tesser (an ordinary user) that: “The ability to watch torrent downloaded movies without converting first: PRICELESS. There are some people who buy movies from the app store. For everyone else, there’s VLC”. Although this app will open doors to things that Apple don’t want you to be doing with your iDevices, but seeing Windows Phone 7 and Android devices unleashing their charm on users, Apple had to allow such apps to make iPad more of a general purpose PC.

NoMute reclaims iPad orientation lock in iOS 4.2, but only if you jailbreak

If you've yet to upgrade your iPad to iOS 4.2.1, and you're head-over-heels with your orientation lock, you've got two options: upgrade and lose that functionality altogether, or upgrade / jailbreak and get it back. Naturally, we'd recommend the latter. In what can only be described as "so typically Apple," the software engineers at Cupertino figured that they'd convert the perfectly acceptable orientation lock switch into a mute switch.

We lamented this fact in our review of the update, but rather than Apple creating (non-fiddly) alternatives within its software, we're left to look for a solution in the jailbreaker's app store.

Hero of Sparta II : iPhone & iPad game

Sometimes you just want to stab things in the stomach with a blade the size of a surfboard. Thankfully, Hero of Sparta II lets you do just that. It’s what would happen if the film 300 were turned into a video game. A good video game, that is. Which means it plays a lot like a touch screen God of War.

There’s a story here, and it takes place directly after the first game. After making his way through hell, musclebound main character Argos returns to Sparta in hopes of finally getting a little rest. But Hades has other ideas. The god decides to make life rough for Argos by filling up Sparta with all kinds of monsters. There are cut-scenes to watch and overwrought dialog to listen to, but really it’s all just an excuse to swing a big sword around. And that’s actually fine by us.

The first Windows Phone 7 ‘Jailbreak’/Unlock ChevronWP7 is Out – Download now!

Admit it. You were waiting for a jailbreak for your WP7 Phone for the sake of ‘freedom’ and whatever it is that gets you going through the day with a phone that can run apps with access to private APIs. Rafael Rivera, Long Zheng and Chris Walsh have come up with ChevronWP7 which lets you unleash the potential of your Windows Phone 7 phone.

ChevronWP7 unlocks your Windows Phone 7 to allow side loading of application that wont be allowed in the Marketplace due to access to private APIs. This unlock works for every WP7 device out there and even reverts it back to the locked state making it safe for the end user.

According to the creators, expect issues with the app since it’s v1.0. Also, the download link seems to be missing so far [Microsoft interference, perhaps?], but as soon as it’s up, we’ll let you know.

Top Android App: 2Player Network Music Player

First off, 2Player is extremely easy to use and requires almost no upfront setup (no software download required, like that for Gmote). The app enables you to play music, a podcast, or other media file on any networked device (DLNA/UPnP supported) around you (e.g. laptop, Xbox360, Playstation 3, DLNA enabled HDTVs). Even better, you also have the ability to play from those devices as well.

A very descriptive example of 2Player’s versatility was provided straight from the developer. “Imagine the following sorts of scenarios. You come home from work; you’re listening to an interesting podcast on your car stereo, played from phone via bluetooth. As you walk in the door, 2player detects your Wi-Fi network, and continues where you left off, playing on your stereo system, connected to your TV. Later on, you put on a little jazz (served up by Windows 7 from your iTunes music collection), and transfer that (using your phone) onto the WD TV Live plus device in your dining room. Music everywhere; with your phone at the center of it all acting as remote control and traffic director, and serving or playing as required.”

iBooks Folders Coming

Similar to folders on the iOS homepage, iBooks will soon be update with “Collections” – the ability to group together your ‘visual media’. You’ll have the ability to name the collection what you like for easy access. Collections can be of either books or PDFs.

Further enhancements apparently will include the ability to email PDFs and to printthem via AirPrint. Apple has made quite clear that printing and emailing of iBooks will not be happening. Oh well – it would be great to share iBooks with a family or friend via email.

Apple’s own documentation reads:
Create, rename, or delete a collection: Tap Collections to display the collections list. Tap New to add a new collection. To delete a collection tap Edit, then tap and tap Delete. You can’t edit or remove the built-in Books and PDFs collections. To edit the name of a collection, tap its name. When you finish, tap Done.
